PLYMOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOLS TEAMS
CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004
FINALS
St Peter's Girls convincingly took the Teams Title, with only Tom Burt from the school's boys team able to stem the tide of girl power.  He defeated Alice Phillips, then Vicky Smith 12-10 in the fifth game but lost out to the girls' number one Laura McLeod.  A  final score of 7-2 left St Peter's Boys in runners-up spot.  Yealmpton Primary School's team of Michael Davis, Tom Howe and Tom Tilbury took third place, while St Peter's third team of Antony & Ronica Pulikal and Alex Rogers won the plate competition.

FINAL RESULTS

PLYMOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOLS TEAMS CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004
FIRST WEEK'S RESULTS TO DETERMINE PLAY-OFF MATCHES

Each player played one opponent from four other teams to determine a ranking order for next week's play-offs.  Highlights were a revenge victory for Laura McLeod over Tom Burt after last week's defeat in the top match, and excellent wins for Michael Davis over Mark Helliwell and individual plate winner Tom Howe over Seb Dartnell.  Nevertheless the St Peter's boys & girls teams filled the top two spots & will play off for the title next week.  St Peter's third team went home pointless from the top group but will play off for the plate competition with Yealmpstone Farm's second team who remained unbeaten in the lower group.

PLYMOUTH PRIMARY SCHOOLS INDIVIDUAL CHAMPIONSHIPS 2004

A top mixed group of nine on the second day of the individual events saw some really close competitive matches.  Seb Dartnell, having taken a game off Tom Burt, had a good win over Mark Helliwell but then came unstuck against both Alice Phillips and Michael Davis.  This let Mark into the boys runners-up spot to break up the St Peters (and Woolwell TTC) monopoly.  Alice had taken Vicky Smith to 15-13 in the final game but then lost 16-14 5-11 8-11 to Mark to share fourth place overall.  Tom Burt had a tough battle against Vicky, coming through 12-10 11-8 but otherwise the top two progressed comfortably to the boys and girls titles respectively.  They met for pride alone in the final match, Tom squeezing home against Laura McLeod 11-9 in the final game.

The plate event was even closer with both final and third place play-off going to the final game.  Scott Lawson beat Tom Howe 12-10 5-11 9-11 to take the title, while Antony Pulikal took third place 12-10 8-11 12-10 against Matthew Collier.

Finally George Monk remained undefeated to win the consolation event, his win over runner-up Jo Stearn the previous week proving critical.  Seven year old Mae Dartnell did well to secure two wins.

  • Chris Warn had a stunning victory over Simon Poyner in four games to take the Devon Schools U-16 title. Freddie Cutler, the youngest competitor, reached the semi-final, while Steve Colwell was unlucky to meet Simon in the quarter-finals..
  • Sally Smith easily won the U-16 girls in a round robin competition, never looking like losing a game in her six matches
  • The latest Chris Smith/Richard Marshall battle went Chris's way just, 11-8 in the fifth game of the U-13 final. Chris had beaten Zak Zacharkiw in the quarter-final & Elliot Goss in the semis.
  • Harry Cutler beat off Bideford's Lee Farrant to take runners-up spot in the U-19's behind Chris Brown.
  • Laura McLeod & Tom Burt did the double for Woolwell and St Peters in the Devon Schools U-11's. We totally dominated the girls with Vicky Smith 2nd, Alice Phillips 3rd & Louise Ryder 4th. Seb Dartnell reached the boys semi-final after a titanic quarter-final struggle with Jack Marsh, saving five match points!

Tamarside & St Boniface put up good shows in the Schools Teams Regional Finals at Cheltenham but failed to reach the last four

AREA TEAMS FINAL AT EGGBUCKLAND ON SUNDAY 18th JAN 2004

The St Boniface team took pride of place, winning the area title comfortably 7--1 against the Somerset champions with Chris, Elliot & Didier unbeaten while Zak only lost narrowly to the opposing number one.

Expectations were high for the St Peter's U-11 girls team but they lost an extremely close match 3-5, again to the Somerset champions with Vicky, Alice & Holly Malek taking one each.  If either of the five game defeats suffered by Laura or Holly had been won St Peter's would have scraped home.

The boys exceeded all expectations by taking their final to the last set after Seb Dartnell (2) & Tom Burt (1) had kept them in the hunt. Antony won the first game & a straight games win would have pulled off an unlikely victory, but he went down in five to leave the final score again 3--5.

The Tamarside Under-16 boys team of Chris Warn, Steve Colwell, Mark Ross & Matt Matheson did well to come 2nd out of three to qualify for the last sixteen in three weeks time.

*********************************************************
Woolwell players dominated the Devon Schools Teams Championships at Plymouth League HQ on November 11th 2003.
Tamarside, including Chris Warn & Mark Ross defeated five opponents to take the boys under-16 title while Chris Smith, Zak Zacharkiw, Elliot Goss & Didier Neza of St Boniface's College were so dominant in the under-13 event that they dropped only two of 24 sets.
St Peter's did the double in the under-11's.  The very strong girls' team including Laura McLeod, Alice Phillips & Vicky Smith were unopposed, while the boys beat Yealmpstone Farm 7--1 to take the county title.  Tom Burt, as expected, was unbeaten, but Jack Marsh & Seb Dartnell showed that their regular Woolwell appearances are bearing fruit by also winning both their matches, while eight year old Antony Pulikal, hopefully another club recruit shortly, won one after only two months in the game.
All will be playing in the Area Final against the champion teams from Cornwall, Somerset & Avon on Sunday January 18th.
