The club first entered three teams in the Beacon Electrical Plymouth & District Table Tennis League in 2000/01 in divisions 6 & 7.  The incorporation of the former China Fleet teams has led to a major expansion.  For 2004/05 we will have twelve teams including four in Division One.  We provide over half of the total junior players in the League.  Our teams have won Divisions 4, 6 and 7 (twice), the Division 4 Cup, the Division 7 Cup (three times).

REPORT 1 MAR 2005

Four DML Woolwell teams competed in the last 16 of the Handicap Cup and remarkably all won by the narrowest margin, 6-5.  Paul Whiting's young teammates, Chris Smith (14) and Chris Warn (16) faced the daunting task of conceding 18 points to fellow first division Woodland Fort A.  Chris Smith took a vital point with a 25-10 25-16 win over Gary West, so with Whiting comfortably taking his three singles and guiding the youngsters through two doubles, Woolwell A scraped home.

Fourth division DML Woolwell F were on the other end of the handicapping, receiving thirty-two against first division leaders ROK A.  Debbie Whiting led the way, beating Mike Hugh, Graham Worth and Joe Clifford Jnr. before coming in to take the vital second doubles with Freddie Cutler.

Richard Marshall (13) and Sally Smith (16) were conceding 30 points to Inter City D, who they were playing in Division Four only last season!  Nevertheless, they each managed one win and with Tony Sweet taking all three, it was Sweet & Marshall who finished things off in the final set for DML Woolwell B.

Second division leaders DML Woolwell E's perfect doubles record this season came to their rescue against third division Trelawny A.  Conceding 18 points they trailed 2-4 and 4-5 but comfortably completed their 17th & 18th doubles successes of the year.

The Division One Cup Final will be between China Fleet and DML Woolwell B.  China Fleet fielded their strongest team of Paul Giles, Darren Reed and Lisa Radford in the semi-final, and a rare defeat for Paul Whiting, against Giles, contributed to DML Woolwell A's 6-2 defeat.  Mike Short also had to concede second best against ROK B's Rory Harries, but three good wins from Richard Marshall saw Woolwell B home 6-3.

The league itself is hotting up.  ROK A are favourites to take the first division title but are being chased all the way by DML Woolwell A and ROK B, while in division two just one point separates DML Woolwell E and Civil Service B.

For the first time since full England international Craig Bryant's youth five years ago, the same player has made a clean sweep of the junior singles titles in the Plymouth League Closed Championships.  Darren Reed, England's number five ranked cadet player, lives in Redruth, but plays regularly in the league for China Fleet.  He comfortably took the Andrew Sandiland Cup (Under 21 Open), Sir John Jackson Cup (Under 18 Boys), Brian Rogers Cup (Under 15 Boys) and Kitto Trophy (Under 15 Open), holding off the combined forces of DML Woolwell's five division one players.

Ironically, Darren's introduction to the Plymouth League in 2000, when he was just ten, was as a Woolwell player.  13 year old Richard Marshall took runners up spot in each event with Chris Smith third in both under 15 events.  DML Woolwell A team-mate Chris Warn joined Chris Smith as beaten semi-finalists in the under 18 and 21 events.

Richard finally took a title when, with Chris Warn, he defeated two more DML Woolwell colleagues, Sally Smith and Freddie Cutler, in the junior doubles final.  Richard, now ranked number nine in the country under-14, also took the Harry Pitts Trophy for Division One & Two players after only just getting through a tough group.  He lost to Chris Smith and only defeated Sally Smith 12-10 in the fifth game to squeeze through.  Sally felt justifiably aggrieved at failing to progress, as her defeat by her brother was even narrower, 13-11 in the fifth! Richard took his revenge on Chris in the final, with John Smith & Harry Cutler completing a clean sweep for Woolwell of the top four positions.

John Smith took the Keith Massey Handicap Secretaries Cup, after a split tie with league vice-chairman Dave Backholer of Trelawney, despite losing to hard bat specialist and super veteran Madeline Pittman.

Communication by e-mail is particularly convenient so if any league players have internet access but have not provided the club with an e-mail address please will they do so.
