Our club championships are in their sixth year & we will be holding the same eleven events as last season, although every year it becomes more and more difficult to fit them in to a very crowded table tennis schedule. This is why they are rather scattered around the next three months!
Every event has a perpetual trophy and permanent trophies are awarded to all winners and runners-up.
We want as strong an entry as possible this year but don't be put off if you are not quite up with our best players. We will use preliminary rounds and byes to ensure that everyone gets plenty of matches at their own level so we want all standards involved.
The club championship events on Sunday 6th March will replace both the coaching and ranking sessions. Entries will be accepted on the day.
The beginners event is open to all those under 15 who started table tennis this season plus any others of a suitable standard at the discretion of the organisers. All players under 15 with less than 1200 points on the club ranking list at the end of Feb will automatically qualify. It will start at 4.30pm.
Entrants for the under 11 event should also be ready to play at 4.30. In addition we will play some groups of the handicap event from 4.30 but will cater for all those who arrive by 6.15pm. This event is planned to finish at around 8.30pm.
The handicap competition is suitable for everyone. The handicaps are based on club rankings with the intention that our weaker players have just as much chance of winning as the strongest!
The cost for all players on 6th March will be £2 per event except that those qualifying for, and playing in, the beginner's event can enter a second event free of charge.
The open, ladies and two doubles events will start at 6pm and finish at around 10.30pm on Wednesday 9th March. Entries will close on Sunday 6th March. The under 14 and under 18 events will be played concurrently with the tournament at our 24-hour marathon on Saturday 30th April & entries will be accepted on the day. The cost is £2 for each singles event & £1 each for doubles.
Reports follow below as the events unfold.

DML Woolwell Table Tennis Club's 24 Hour Marathon was an overwhelming success, with nearly fifty people competing in the various competitions, over 100 attending the club's awards presentation, and 34 hardy individuals staying all night. The club's promising younger players dominated the individual competition. The main singles title went to 13 year old Richard Marshall, who defeated Harry Cutler (17) in the final. The plate event was won by another fast improving 13 year old, Michael Griffiths, from the tournament's oldest player, Clive Marlow. 9 year old Joshua Beaven beat James Marsh in the consolation final. Richard made it a treble by also taking the Club Championship Junior and Under 14 events which were played on the same day. In each case Chris Smith was the runner-up. Jack Marsh gained some revenge for his Plymouth Primary Schools defeat by taking the Under 11 title from Vicky Smith. The evening's fun event produced a final played on a table just 26 by 13 inches, in which Paul Whiting & Vicky Smith defeated Freddie Cutler & Katie Wilson.
HANDICAP
DML Woolwell's club championship events continued with the handicap singles attracting a bumper entry of 44. Some savage handicaps produced early exits for most of the top players - Devon number one Paul Whiting being among the first to depart! After 87 matches, 11 year old newcomer Chris Edwards from Newton Ferrers came out on top, defeating Alex Rogers (10) in an exciting final. Beaten semi-finalists were Amy Whiting and Yetty Smith.
TEAMS
The club's sixth annual championships got under way with 42 players competing in the team's event. Victory went to Paul Whiting, Harry Cutler and Sally Smith who defeated the experienced combination of Graham & Jon May and John Griffiths in the final. While Whiting predictably beat Jon May, the critical set was Smith's four game victory over Graham May.
Youth prevailed in the second division as Laura McLeod, Alice Phillips and Vicky Smith completed a convincing 3-0 final success against Michael Griffiths, Rob Marshall and Yetty Smith.
